Kiosk: The first scratch card prepaid Internet Kiosk in Ireland
What do you do when your business is getting squeezed? You adapt. Entrenchment isn’t an option. That’s why this large Irish telecoms company came to us with an idea. They needed an internet kiosk system to complement their phone and call card products. We were here to help.
- We agreed a partnership arrangement to share costs, risks and rewards.
- We developed a customised Linux based kiosk system within 7 months of receiving their brief.
- We created a system that was secure, reliable and easy to set up.
- By using a scratchcard instead of coins, we created a system that prevented anyone from getting a free ride.
The client was able to outsource production of our well-documented, easy to install, modular design and the booths spread rapidly, reaching fifty different sites.
In six years of operation, the network brought in over six hundred thousand Euros in revenue. It ran without a single day’s downtime until it was retired in 2010.
The PH Group (Now part of Experian)
When this client came to us, they were using out-of-date development practices. Our analysis showed that the business was slow to react to customer requirements and as a result was suffering from restricted growth.
We streamlined and updated their development process by:
- Introducing revision control, allowing developers to more easily coordinate and track changes to the source code efficiently. Result: no more hours lost copying changes to each other.
- Introduced an issue tracking system, allowing customer issues to be recorded, so a team of developers could tackle problems directly. The new system allowed management to organise ordered software releases.
- Introduced the Agile Development methodology. This allowed the team to prioritise the features and fixes going into ordered software releases.
- Introduced unit and acceptance testing, as part of the agile development methodology, to catch problems early. This greatly reduced the cost of fixing problems after delivery and provided a better service to our client’s customers.
- Replaced the table based layout of our client’s web applications with a modern XHTML and CSS based layout, reducing the maintenance and update cost of the client’s web applications.
Content management system for musicians
We don’t just produce perfect applications. We build websites as well. A classical musician asked us to put together a standalone website to promote her career.
Once the site was up and running word-of-mouth marketing brought in a number of new clients wanting us to design similar sites. We identified a new market and built a content management system tailored to musicians wishing to promote their services, careers and ensembles with client-managed content pages, discography entries, news and searchable repertoire databases.
As a result of our success in this arena, we now offer web development services as a base package with custom design work.
PCI Compliance
All businesses connected to the Payment Card Industry are required to adhere to the PCI Data Security Standards to protect cardholder data and avoid penalties from the banks. Our client, a cinema software service provider, required us to ensure their transactions were PCI-DSS compliant. We:
- Analysed how the PCI-DSS rules applied at all levels, from network security to cardholder data protection.
- Researched the available technologies and provided a project proposal to cover options for developing different cryptographic software and hardware modules within a tight budget.
- We made our options scalable so the company would have a built-in response to future growth.
- We implemented the new systems and tested to ensure PCI-DSS compliance.
- We set up a Public Key Infrastructure to manage the company’s generation and distribution of the digital certificates which secure the company’s systems.
- We used hardware security modules to store critical certificate authorities, thus preventing unauthorized access.
